PDF documents are cross-platform documents that can be read by the free Adobe Reader (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html) software.

Some websites offering free PDF compilation:

Apple Mac OSX (from Panther onwards) supports creation of PDFs automatically - I just upgraded to Tiger and its even better than before. Just go to print in the file menu, choose save as PDF and tadaaaaa - PDF. :)

Dear Will,

Ah, I've never used Open Office so it wasn't an obvious one for me.

Thanks, Derek.

I have used it for a few weeks and found it very easy and quick. I bought it from Ebay. I don't remember the sellers details now, but type in item number
160047370877 in the search bar and that should get you to them.

Yes I know I could have downloaded it free, but it came with some other useful software (which I proably could have downloaded free as well), but £2.00 wasn't going to break the bank.

Hi

If anyone is interested, we supply Open Office and other free open source office software on a promotional CD we distribute.

That is one of our services, migrating businesses from expensive commercial licenses to Open Source.

Out of interest, Phil, does that include migrating people away from Windows operating systems?

The likes of Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/) have come a huge way to making such transitions easier

I'm a Kubuntu/Ubuntu user and friends with a few people who work on it. The problem is the rising cost of licensing of Microsoft products which can knock a big hole in the budget of small businesses. When I was setting up my systems, I looked at the price of a basic windows server license, and decided to use a Ubuntu server instead.

The only problem is, certain aspects of installing software even on Ubuntu with its package management can sometimes be a bit tricky for the novice user, if there is not a unbuntu package available. However, saying that, I've found the auto update on ubuntu a lot smoother than windows update. Linux user groups are also a very good source of information, there is always someone who can help.

Hi there,

Just to add to your PDF writer list, I can highly recommend CuteFTP - it's also free, and amazing. I have been using it for 3 years now and although I have tried other free and open source solution, keep coming back to it.

A quick search on Google will provide the URL.

Best wishes

Suzanne
