Blogs have a useful purpose and can help business owners engage with customers... or competitors.
It can also be used as initially intended - like an online journal/diary of daily/weekly tasks involved in a business.
It can also serve as a means of providing various bits of information.
In essence, blogs are a flexible means for communicating with a range of different people and groups.
I have had various 'hobby blogs' in the past and have now just started my first 'business' blog as I am looking to get starting my own business very soon. I am almost at the trading stage and am hoping to eventually build up my blog to become a useful resource site for all business networking enthusiasts.
For anyone wanting to get into blogging, then a free blog platform is available from wordpress.org (or you can use blogger.com) - though it is normally always better to host your own domain and information instead of having it held by 3rd parties.

I have seen a lot of programmers/consultants make very good use of a blog to market their consulting services, the only problem is, they do take time to update, I have a personal one which I never seem to get round to updating.
